Themis Bar Review – SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE!

As you approach final exams and graduation, Themis Bar Review has several important reminders for May 2011 graduates:

Payment Plans or Public Interest Scholarships: Themis understands that the current economic situation in our country has reduced the availability of jobs for law school graduates and reduced the availability of some bar loans. We want to help. If you need financial assistance or additional time to pay your balance, please contact

Shannon Reifsteck at shannon.reifsteck@themisbar.com or 312-589-6198.

In addition, Themis Bar Review offers Public Interest Scholarships to students who have accepted positions with public interest organizations. Students that have accepted a position in public service or for a government office and whose employer is not paying for bar review may qualify for a reduced tuition rate of $995.

To apply, please contact Shannon Reifsteck (shannon.reifsteck@themisbar.com).

Upon completion of a very brief form and providing supporting documentation, scholarships will be granted until all funds are dispersed.

There is no payment deadline or late fees with Themis Bar Review. We encourage all students to make payment no later than May 1 to ensure books arrive before May 23 course start date for all available Themis courses.

The Global Legal Studies Center is pleased to invite

you a workshop on:

Social Life of Legal Innovations

Part of the Research Circle on “Role of Law in Developing and Transition Countries”

Day 1: Friday, April 29, 2011, 3:00-5:00pm

Day 2: Saturday, April 30, 2011, 8:30am-4:00pm
Lubar Commons (7200 Law), UW Law School

About the workshop:
The workshop will focus on the development of new approaches to the empirical study of law and legal innovation. The basic premise is that we wish to explore the emergence of “neo-Westphalian” legal forms that are evident in the relationship between globalization, legal pluralism and legal institutions, and that create a context in which the national is disciplined simultaneously from above and below. This approach enables us to confront these developments on two different registers at the same time – at the global or transnational scale, where legal fragmentation is most evident, as well as at the local scale where legal pluralism is most common.

Participants:

Javier Couso, Universidad Diego Portales, Chile

Sida Liu, UW-Madison

Alex Huneeus, UW-Madison

Mario Gomez, Law Commision, Sri Lanka

Rachel Sieder, CIESAS (Centro de Investigación y Educación Superior en

Antropología Social), Mexico

Sindiso Mnisi, University of Cape Town, South Africa

Shalanda Baker, UW-Madison

Sumudu Atapattu, UW-Madison

David Engel, University at Buffalo Law School, New York

Allison Christians, UW-Madison

Heinz Klug, UW-Madison

Cesar Rodriguez, University of the Andes Law School, Colombia
John Ohnesorge, UW-Madison

Sponsored by:

The Global Legal Studies Center with support from the Division of International Studies,

The International Institute and Global Studies

All are welcome, no registration necessary

QLaw

2011-2012 Book Scholarship

***DUE DATE EXTENDED***

Announcing QLaw’s 2011-2012 Book Scholarship!

The QLaw Book Scholarship is a $500 award designed to support a rising 2L or 3L that has significantly contributed to the LGBTQ community, both within the Law School and the greater community. This support comes by helping offset the cost of books during the 2011-2012 academic year.

The scholarship is available to any current 1L or 2L who is in good academic standing and who otherwise receives financial aid. The award is based on a scholarship application essay of 750 words or fewer. (The word limit will be strictly enforced.) Applicants will be asked to describe their contributions to the LGBTQ community and why they deserve the award.

To apply for the scholarship, students must complete the form available at [ https://uwmadison.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_e5rOOQVu4Yk7oos ]. The online form will be available until April 27. Once the applications are complete, one QLaw Co-Chair will assign each applicant a random number and file the names and numbers with the other QLaw Co-Chair. The completed applications will then be turned over to the Director of Student Life, Mike Hall, with the applicants’ respective random numbers substituted for their names. Mr. Hall will then evaluate the essays and select a winner.

Please feel free to email qlaw@qlaw.org with any questions. This information is also available at our website at www.qlaw.org. Good luck!

We’ll start with President and work our way down the list of officers. Each candidate will have the opportunity to speak to the group or have a statement read if they are unable to attend. (Email your statement if you are unable to attend.) We will use secret ballot if there is more than one candidate for the office.

After the meeting we will walk down to Buraka to celebrate the close of one great year and the beginning of another. The conversation will be free, but you will be on your own for food.

Good luck!
