BULLIED screening with Jamie Nabozny.

Bullied is part of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Teaching Tolerance documentary series and teaching kits – part of the project aimed at ending anti-gay bullying in schools. The film, titled “Bullied: A Student, a School and a Case that Made History,” will show how Jamie Nabozny stood up to his tormentors and filed a federal lawsuit against a school in Ashland, WI. His suit led to a landmark court decision that a public school could be held accountable for not stopping anti-gay abuse.

SPLC President Richard Cohen, executive producer of “Bullied,” said the film is not an effort to change people’s views about homosexuality. “We’re not asking people to take a political position. We’re not asking people to change their religious beliefs. We are just saying that gay and lesbian students have a right to be protected in our schools,” Cohen said. “We are trying to tell a dramatic story and get across the idea of how wrong bullying can be.”

Law Book Giveaway

11 Apr

As part of our National Library Week celebration, the Law Library will be having our annual book giveaway on Monday, April 11th beginning at 10:00 am in the Grand Reading Room.

Browse through an assortment of discarded law books and grab a few treasures.

Donate a Book to Help Provide Self-represented Litigants with Legal Research Materials

7 Apr

The number of self-represented litigants is steadily increasing in Dane County. In some areas, as many as 70% of cases involve pro se litigants.

The Dane Co. Legal Resource Center provides research assistance for many pro se litigants, but budget cuts are jeopardizing their ability to provide needed materials.

Therefore, the Dane County Bar Association and the DCLRC are holding a book sale to try to raise enough money to purchase another year’s subscription to Shepards. The sale will be held on May 2nd at the Dane County Courthouse.

In order to hold the sale, they are looking for donations of gently-used recreational books. All genres are welcome, including contemporary fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, cookbooks, and more.

In celebration of National Library Week, donations will be accepted in the Law Library all week, April 11-15, 2011.

The scholarship is available to any current 1L or 2L who is in good academic standing and who otherwise receives financial aid. The award is based on a scholarship application essay of 750 words or fewer. (The word limit will be strictly enforced.) Applicants will be asked to describe their contributions to the LGBTQ community and why they deserve the award.

To apply for the scholarship, students must complete the form available at [ https://uwmadison.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_e5rOOQVu4Yk7oos ]. The online form will be available until April 6. Once the applications are complete, one QLaw Co-Chair will assign each applicant a random number and file the names and numbers with the other QLaw Co-Chair. The completed applications will then be turned over to the Director of Student Life, Mike Hall, with the applicants’ respective random numbers substituted for their names. Mr. Hall will then evaluate the essays and select a winner. The QLaw Co-Chairs will certify the winner, whose name will be announced at QLaw’s Gala 2011 on April 16.

Please feel free to email qlaw@qlaw.org with any questions. This information is also available at our website atwww.qlaw.org. Good luck!
