Come Interact With Your Future Professors

The law school is seeking to hire a new professor. Our third faculty candidate, Shirin Sinnar, will be visiting this upcoming Monday, November 7th. Shirin’s “job talk” presentation will be based on her forthcoming paper, Do Inspectors General Protect Individual Rights? Constraining Executive Power Against National Security Abuses. The presentation will be from 12 p.m to 1:20 p.m. and students can meet with her from 1:45 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. As usual, food will be provided during the presentation and refreshments are provided during the student interaction period.

Shirin’s research focuses on the protection of individual rights in the national security context outside the standard rights-based framework of adjudication. Shirin is currently a Law Fellow at Stanford Law School. Prior to her time teaching at Stanford, Shirin worked as a staff attorney at the Asian Law Caucus in San Francisco and, prior to that, as an Equal Justice Works Fellow and attorney at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, also in San Francisco. She began her legal career as a law clerk to Judge Warren Ferguson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Shirin graduated with distinction from Stanford Law School in 2003. She also earned an M. Phil. In International Relations from Cambridge University in 1999 and an A.B. in History, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, from Harvard College in 1998.

If you have any questions, feel free to email Christopher Byers cbyers@wisc.edu or Eli Wykell ejwykell@wisc.edu.

The University of Wisconsin Law School Law & Entrepreneurship Clinic (L&E Clinic) is recruiting students for the summer 2012 program, with an option to participate during the 2012-2013 academic year.

Applicants should email Janet Christopher a cover letter and resume no later than November 11, 2011. The cover letter should identify any experience and legal education in transactional law, intellectual property, entrepreneurship, client interface, or science. Rising 3Ls are given priority.

Law & Entrepreneurship Clinic Summer 2012 Program

This eleven-week, 40 hour per week immersion experience provides students the opportunity to work with startup businesses and entrepreneurs. The L&E Clinic operates as a law firm using a paper-less document management and time keeping system and is located at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery. L&E Clinic participants will use what they have learned in the classroom, what they discover through research and collaboration and their legal and life experience to prioritize and solve problems facing their clients. L&E Clinic participants are supervised by experienced business law and corporate attorneys and respond to wide ranging legal needs, including business formation, capital structure, funding, intellectual property and contracts. The L&E Clinic provides quality legal services with a robust review process of work by private practice attorneys. L&E Clinic participants develop skills and confidence in client interface while providing thoughtful and productive solutions to legal, business, and ethical challenges confronting early stage businesses. The L&E Clinic uses the varied expertise of individual L&E Clinic participants to provide collaborative quality legal services. The L&E Clinic seeks to provide legal expertise in coordination with accounting and business planning consulting to clients and continually explores out-state clients as part of Law in Action and the personification of the Wisconsin Idea. The summer L&E Clinic includes training in a wide range of legal, ethical, and practical issues expected to confront L&E Clinic participants. As the summer concludes, L&E Clinic participants will meet with a supervising attorney to determine the appropriateness of continued participation during the 2012-2013 academic year. Additional students will be recruited at a later date to supplement the summer students for participation during the 2012-2013 academic year. A tuition credit plus a stipend will be available to accepted students. Permission of the instructor is necessary to enroll.

The Role of Public and Private Regulation in Detecting and Responding to Foodborne Disease Outbreaks

November 21, 2011, 1:30 to 4:30pm

Managing Import Safety, a collaborative project funded by the Center for World Affairs and the Global Economy (WAGE), examines market, regulatory, and hybrid approaches to preventing and detecting economic adulteration and accidental contamination of the food supply. In this final event, our multidisciplinary project team proposes to evaluate and compare the current systems for detecting and responding to foodborne outbreaks in the U.S. and the European Union. In the context of recent, produce-related foodborne outbreaks in the EU and the US, we will examine and compare the respective approaches, assessing challenges in surveillance, detection, trace-back and identification of a contaminated food item. Finally, we will consider lessons learned from recent outbreaks by examining issues of public health, responsibilities of industry, and comparisons of regulatory frameworks.

To register, please send an email to Lorna Zach (lzach@engr.wisc.edu) with your name, affiliation, and email contact information.
Dr. Serratosa is interested in having meetings with groups and research teams on the UW – Madison campus to present his views, and forge ties for future collaborative work.

WAUKESHA COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP

For several years, the Waukesha County Bar Association has been awarding two scholarships, one to a law student enrolled at the University of Wisconsin Law School and one to a law student enrolled at Marquette University Law School. These scholarships are again being offered in this 2011-12 academic year. In the recent past, the scholarship amount has been $1,000. It is anticipated that the 2011-12 award again will be in the amount of $1,000, although the WCBA Board of Directors retains the discretion to vary the amount of the award from year-to-year and no final determination has been made regarding this year’s award amount.

This scholarship is open to current first year, second year and third year law students. It is not necessary to demonstrate financial need, as the scholarship is merit-based. However, to qualify, a student must show a substantial connection with or long-term commitment to Waukesha County, as more fully detailed on the attached application form.

Qualified students who are interested in applying should complete the attached application, attaching any additional statement or resume that they wish to have taken into consideration. The application must be post-marked by December 1, 2011 and mailed to:

Victoria J. Schroeder

WCBA Scholarship Chairperson

2574 Sun Valley Dr. #200

Delafield, WI 53018

Alternatively, the application and supporting materials may be submitted electronically, on or before December 1, 2011, to:
