THANK YOU to everyone who voted for Stuart’s Law Revue’s ITT Tech Commercial Spoof in the Above the Law’s Annual Law Revue Contest! We are proud to report that we placed in the Top 5 in a national contest. (Ok, international if you count Canada as a country, but who really does?)

To see more reasons why Stuart’s is now an infamous name in Law Revue greatness, check out our Youtube channel. It’s a great way to procrastinate when you’re supposed to be studying for finals! (And for all you Allison Christians-o-philes out there… we were just kidding about Canada.)

Visiting Associate Professor of East Asian Studies
Bryn Mawr College

12:00PM, THURSDAY, APRIL 26, 2012
LUBAR COMMONS, 7200 LAW

A light lunch will be served on a first-come, first-served basis

Abstract
Religious values and practices have played a significant role in shaping legal culture in China’s long history. Even under contemporary secular Communist government, religion and law are still closely interrelated and interact on each other in ethnic minority communities. In the “Miao Territory” at Fenghuang County, Hunan Province, the Miao (or “Hmong” as addressed outside China) society retains rich religious tradition. This talk focuses on its ritual specialist—the Miao priest, examining how he formulates, articulates, and applies community rules. Operating under Miao customary law, the Miao priest serves as one of the center pieces in his society and bridges the ethnic and state laws.

FAQs

1) What happens if I don’t renew?

2) What if I’m taking summer classes or am a 3L studying for a bar exam, but do not wish to renew?
A: If you are in summer classes or studying for a bar exam, you may continue possession of your locker until August 5th, provided that you email Michael Weigel (mwweigel@wisc.edu) your name, locker number, and grounds for extension by Friday April 27.
ATTENTION ALL LAW STUDENTS:

Locker Renewals

By renewing this spring you save $10 and guarantee that you will have a locker next year. Unrented lockers will receive new locks over the summer.

**If you do NOT renew, you will have until JUNE 15th to clean out your locker. This message constitutes your notice to clean out your locker if you fail to renew. There will be no subsequent reminders.

WHEN: Monday April 23rd – Friday April 27th from 10am – 4pm

WHERE: Atrium

PRICE: $60 (cash or check payable to UW SBA)

FAQs

1) What happens if I don’t renew?
A: A student who fails to renew by April 27th will forfeit use of the locker as of June 15th. At that time, the contents will be held by the SBA for 4 weeks, after which time the contents shall become the property of the SBA. (See §1306 of the SBA By-Laws)

**On August 6th, the contents of your locker will be emptied and become property of the SBA.
***If you do not email Michael Weigel, your locker will be cleaned out with all of the other lockers on June 15th (see §1305 of the SBA By-Laws).

3) My Student Organization has a locker – what do we need to do?
A: Nothing. Student Organizations will continue to use the same lockers free of charge.
4) What do you do with the locker revenue?
A: The majority of locker revenue is used to provide funding to other student groups within the law school. It is also used to fund SBA events and conduct SBA operations. (See §1304 of the SBA By-Laws)

Since Spring 2011, more than 400 law students and recent law school graduates have signed an online petition to encourage Congress to enact a legislative clerkship program.

Under the Constitution, Congress drives the federal lawmaking process and is the branch most accountable to the people. Yet of the three branches of the federal government, Congress is by far the least influential on the constitutional perspective of top lawyers and is the least accessible to them, because it does not have a formal legal apprenticeship program similar to the judiciary’s clerkship program or executive agencies’ honors programs. Accordingly, a small fraction of the profession’s elite has legislative work experience, compared to experience working for the executive branch, judges, law firms, and law schools. Congress needs a Clerkship Program.

Momentum is building in Congress. In April 2011, bipartisan sponsors Reps. Lungren (R-CA) and Lofgren (D-CA) reintroduced a bill (H.R. 1374) to create a pilot program of six clerk positions in each chamber. Last session, the House passed the bill by an overwhelming margin of 381-42.

To make a Congressional Clerkship program a reality, we need your help. Please take a few moments to join more than 400 law students in signing our petition to Congress, available at our website, http://www.congressionalclerkship.com. We believe that with a broad demonstration of student support, Congress will take action and pass the Daniel Webster Congressional Clerkship Act into law.

Sincerely,

Sincerely,
