Visit to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility

The next visit to the ICE detention facility in Dodge County is scheduled for Wednesday, February 29. The visit is conducted in collaboration with the National Immigrant Justice Center to screen persons detained by ICE for relief from deportation. Immigrant detainees are not eligible for court-appointed counsel and this is usually the only service offered to them throughout the deportation process.

These trips are a great opportunity to get firsthand experience and implement the skills learned in law school. 1Ls are encouraged to attend as are 2Ls and 3Ls! No prior immigration law experience is necessary, but Spanish language skills are helpful. We are also in need and would greatly appreciate any UW certified drivers to volunteer.

Dane County Law Day-Mock Trial Volunteers Needed

The Dane County Bar Association is having its Law Day on May 1st. On the afternoon of the 1st they will have a mock trial with local judges and attorneys. They are looking for 12 current students to participate in the mock trial. It will last for approximately four hours during the afternoon, but preparation for the mock trial will start in late March and continue after spring break.

Dana Priest is an American author and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist whose work focuses on intelligence and counterterrorism. As one of The Washington Post’s specialists on National Security she has written many articles on the United States’ “War on terror.” In 2006 she won the Pulitzer Prize for Beat Reporting for her reporting on black site prisons and in 2008 The Washington Post was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service for the reporting of Priest and Anne Hull and photographer Michel du Cille at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.

Priest’s most recent book, “Top Secret America: The Rise of the New American Security State” was published in September, 2011. Co-authored with William Arkin, it uncovers and explores the top-secret world the U.S. government created in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Her previous book, “The Mission: Waging War and Keeping Peace with America’s Military” was published in March, 2003.

“Who Answers When the Landlord Calls? Interpreting Property and the ‘German Idea of Freedom,’ 1650-1800″
Using small case studies in Germany in the period under study, the project traces relationships between abstract theories of human freedom and specific conflicts over property rights in early modern Germany, specifically in the Hessian and Rhine-Main region. This study deepens our understanding of the foundations of market society and liberalism in Europe. The book’s intellectual sketch is based on numerous court, academic and ministerial documents, while the social narrative will be plotted on the basis of social network analysis of the thousands of small actors and writers. Relationships among statesmen, lawyers and professors will be measured specifically for clustering, bridging and node-centrality.

The SPSF program provides stipends to University of Wisconsin Law School students who take unpaid or extremely low-paid summer public service jobs. Any returning enrolled University of Wisconsin Law School student may apply. This includes 1Ls, 2Ls, and any joint-degree students who will not have graduated from the law school prior to completing work at the funded position.

Visit to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility

The next visit to the ICE detention facility in Dodge County is scheduled for Wednesday, February 29. The visit is conducted in collaboration with the National Immigrant Justice Center to screen persons detained by ICE for relief from deportation. Immigrant detainees are not eligible for court-appointed counsel and this is usually the only service offered to them throughout the deportation process.

These trips are a great opportunity to get firsthand experience and implement the skills learned in law school. 1Ls are encouraged to attend as are 2Ls and 3Ls! No prior immigration law experience is necessary, but Spanish language skills are helpful. We are also in need and would greatly appreciate any UW certified drivers to volunteer.

The SPSF program provides stipends to University of Wisconsin Law School students who take unpaid or extremely low-paid summer public service jobs. Any returning enrolled University of Wisconsin Law School student may apply. This includes 1Ls, 2Ls, and any joint-degree students who will not have graduated from the law school prior to completing work at the funded position.

There is a new lecture series being sponsored by the Department of Philosophy entitled “UW Philosophers Tackle Contemporary Issues.”
The inaugural lecture, given by Prof. Dan Hausman, will be on preferential admissions at the UW.

Five law professors and legal practitioners from around the country will present their forthcoming articles and suggest less biased policy alternatives in the areas of: scrutiny applied to sex discrimination claims, marriage equality, sex verification testing in international sports, contraceptive fraud and reproductive equality, and business regulation. At the end we’ll be having an h’ors d’oeuvres reception and informal discussion.

Hoofers Ski & Snowboard Club is hosting a free night of skiing and snowboarding at Tyrol Basin in Mt. Horeb this Saturday, February 11th from 9:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Lift tickets are free, as is the bus to Tyrol, as well as lesson for those just learning. For those who need rentals they are only $10! Attention those looking to participate in community outreach. UW SBA is looking for volunteer coaches for this year’s Middle School Mock Trial competition.
Coaches will be responsible for going to local middle schools once a week starting mid- February to prep middle school students for the competition to take place on April 14. We are looking for coaches for the following times:

The trip features a day in Chicago during which lawyers at 5 prominent business law firms (McDermott Will & Emery, Sidley Austin, Mayer Brown, Jones Day, and Bryan Cave) explain their practice specialties. Several lawyers at each firm describe their individual practices, sometimes in general, sometimes by talking about a specific project.

We travel by chartered bus, leaving the law school at 7:00 am and arriving in Chicago at 10:15a.m. We spend an hour and twenty minutes at each of our five host firms. At the end of our day we eat in the River North area before the bus departs at 8:00p.m., arriving in Madison at roughly 10:30p.m.

Applicants are now being accepted for the Donald O’Brien Scholarship. Judge O’Brien is a Senior Federal Judge in the Northern District of Iowa, with his Chambers in Sioux City. The scholarship was set up by the Judge’s law clerks in 1993 to honor his commitment to public service. It provides financial recognition to first- and second-year law students with Iowa ties who have demonstrated a commitment to the public interest and civil rights. The scholarship award is One Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00), awarded annually.

The scholarship committee, comprised of myself and four (4) other former law clerks, has provided applications to a total of seventeen (17) law schools, in Iowa and in each contiguous state. We have been very encouraged over the years by the breadth of applications and the range of experience of the applicants. We hope that this year will generate applications from an even broader array of students.

Unemployment Appeals Clinic (UAC)

Training

Tuesday 2/7 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM in 5240 and

Wednesday 2/8 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM in 5240

Prospective new advocates only need to attend one of these sessions. Those who trained to be advocates in Fall 2011 are not required to attend but would also benefit from these sessions; the lectures will focus more on substantive Unemployment Insurance law than before (as opposed to administrative procedure).

The Unemployment Appeals Clinic is open to ALL Law Students, including 1Ls!

* Get valuable clinical/litigation experience

* Potential to draft appellate briefs to the LIRC board

* Provide much-needed representation to low-income clients

* Work with experienced supervising attorneys from the Madison area

* Minimal Time Commitment: 6-12 hours per semester

Student advocates attend training, then conduct intake sessions with clients, who are Madison-area workers seeking unemployment compensation benefits. You will work with real clients and have a hands-on opportunity handling cases from intake through hearing. As you probably know, Citizens United is a 2010 U.S. Supreme Court case holding that the First Amendment prohibits Congress from placing limits on independent spending for political purposes by corporations and unions. On February 8, at 5:30 p.m., in Room 3253, the Federalist Society will be hosting a debate on this case and its implications for campaign finance. Applicants are now being accepted for the Donald O’Brien Scholarship. Judge O’Brien is a Senior Federal Judge in the Northern District of Iowa, with his Chambers in Sioux City. The scholarship was set up by the Judge’s law clerks in 1993 to honor his commitment to public service. It provides financial recognition to first- and second-year law students with Iowa ties who have demonstrated a commitment to the public interest and civil rights. The scholarship award is One Thousand Dollars ($1,000.00), awarded annually.

The scholarship committee, comprised of myself and four (4) other former law clerks, has provided applications to a total of seventeen (17) law schools, in Iowa and in each contiguous state. We have been very encouraged over the years by the breadth of applications and the range of experience of the applicants. We hope that this year will generate applications from an even broader array of students.

DCBA New Lawyers Section will be having its “January”* event next Thursday, February 2. Attorney Anne MacArthur will be talking about “Common Mistakes in Personal Injury Cases”, as part of our ongoing series.
Atty. MacArthur was a partner at the Madison office of Habush, Habish & Rottier, a former Assistant Litigation Counsel at the Office of Lawyer Regulation and recently opened a solo practice. She’s also sharp as a knife, and it’s sure to be a good presentation.

The Iranian American Bar Association is pleased to announce that it is currently accepting applications for the 2012-2013 IABA Scholarship.

IABA grants one or more scholarships each year to law students who have demonstrated a commitment to the advancement of the Iranian-American community. Applicants must be of Iranian heritage and full-time students at an accredited law school in the United States who are not otherwise receiving full educational funding from another organization.

Headline: Student hourly help needed

Text: The Global Legal Studies Center of the Law School is seeking a student who can work a few hours a week at the Center. Hours are flexible and the work will involve helping the Associate Director with various events she organizes as well as with the exchange programs. It may be possible to pick up some hours at the Institute for Legal Studies as well.

The selected student will start immediately and the appointment will be made for the semester, with the possibility of being renewed next year subject to making satisfactory progress and availability of funds. If you know of your summer plans, please indicate that in the cover letter.

Unemployment Appeals Clinic (UAC)

Training

Tuesday 2/7 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM in 5240 and

Wednesday 2/8 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM in 5240

Prospective new advocates only need to attend one of these sessions. Those who trained to be advocates in Fall 2011 are not required to attend but would also benefit from these sessions; the lectures will focus more on substantive Unemployment Insurance law than before (as opposed to administrative procedure).

The Unemployment Appeals Clinic is open to ALL Law Students, including 1Ls!

* Get valuable clinical/litigation experience

* Potential to draft appellate briefs to the LIRC board

* Provide much-needed representation to low-income clients

* Work with experienced supervising attorneys from the Madison area

* Minimal Time Commitment: 6-12 hours per semester

Student advocates attend training, then conduct intake sessions with clients, who are Madison-area workers seeking unemployment compensation benefits. You will work with real clients and have a hands-on opportunity handling cases from intake through hearing. The Dude: “That rug really tied the room together.”

A couple of Wisconsin Law School rugs are missing from the law school – usually when guests walk into the Atrium, they are greeted by official law school rugs and they really did tie the Atrium together. More importantly, they’re actually quite expensive, they gave the building a professional touch, and the law school can’t afford to replace things illicitly removed from the building. We’re not interested in punishing or disciplining anyone – we just want the rugs back. If you have any information or are willing to leave it somewhere at a given time, please contact Michelle Yun (myun@wisc.edu). The University of Wisconsin has started using a new campus-wide internet system in hopes that it will increase connection speed and create continuity between campus buildings so individuals do not have to sign in to the UW system if they walk from one building to another.

As you probably know, Citizens United is a 2010 U.S. Supreme Court case holding that the First Amendment prohibits Congress from placing limits on independent spending for political purposes by corporations and unions. On February 8, at 5:30 p.m., in Room 3253, the Federalist Society will be hosting a debate on this case and its implications for campaign finance. The debate will be between Allison Hayward from the Center for Competitive Politics and Jay Heck from Common Cause in Wisconsin. Professor Anuj Desai will moderate. Blind Buckies are a team of mostly law students looking for a few
skaters to fill out the roster for this semester’s intramural season.

Games are once a week on either Wednesday or Thursday nights, starting Wednesday Feb. 1st and going through March.

We are in the Intermediate level (B) league, so middle school or preferably high school hockey experience would be helpful.

Pads and Helmets are a must, cost is $20 for the season.

Applications for the American Association for Justice’s Women for Justice Education Fund’s 2012 Mike Eidson Scholarship are now available.
The Mike Eidson Scholarship Fund was established by the AAJ Women Trial Lawyers Caucus in 2008, in honor of AAJ Past President Mike Eidson, whose vision and generosity inspired it. The Scholarship, traditionally given in the amount of $5,000, is awarded annually to a rising 3L (or rising 4L in a night program) female student who has demonstrated a commitment to a career as a plaintiffs’ lawyer or criminal defense lawyer, along with dedication to upholding and defending the principles of the Constitution, and to the concept of a fair trial, the adversary system, and a just result for the injured, the accused, and those whose rights are jeopardized.
The application deadline is May 31, 2012 and the Scholarship will be awarded at the AAJ Annual Convention, which will take place this year in July in Chicago.

Visit to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility

The next visit to the ICE detention facility in Dodge County is scheduled for Wednesday, February 1. The visit is
conducted in collaboration with the National Immigrant Justice Center to screen persons detained by ICE for relief
from deportation. Immigrant detainees are not eligible for court-appointed counsel and this is usually the only
service offered to them throughout the deportation process.

These trips are a great opportunity to get firsthand experience and implement the skills learned in law school.
1Ls are encouraged to attend as are 2Ls and 3Ls! No prior immigration law experience is necessary, but Spanish
language skills are helpful. We are also in need and would greatly appreciate any UW certified drivers to volunteer.

Marsha L. Varvil-Weld, the Public Education Coordinator for the State Bar of Wisconsin, is looking for law students to participate in scoring high school mock trial competitions. The competitions help high school students develop research and oral advocacy skills while also learning how a trial works. Law students who would like to participate will be responsible for inputting the scores of each mock trial team into a software system.

This is a great opportunity for law students to network with lawyers and judges that help these events run smoothly. Volunteers will need to have access to a car in order to participate because the mock trials happen all over the Wisconsin area, including Madison, La Crosse, Janesville, and Juneau.

The State Bar will have a training session for volunteers in late January. The first competition will be on February 11th.

Applicants must be of Iranian heritage and full-time students at an accredited law school in the United States who are not otherwise receiving full educational funding from another organization.

Text: The Global Legal Studies Center of the Law School is seeking a student who can work a few hours a week at the Center. Hours are flexible and the work will involve helping the Associate Director with various events she organizes as well as with the exchange programs. A couple of Wisconsin Law School rugs are missing from the law school – usually when guests walk into the Atrium, they are greeted by official law school rugs and they really did tie the Atrium together. More importantly, they’re actually quite expensive, they gave the building a professional touch, and the law school can’t afford to replace things illicitly removed from the building. We’re not interested in punishing or disciplining anyone – we just want the rugs back. Applications for the American Association for Justice’s Women for Justice Education Fund’s 2012 Mike Eidson Scholarship are now available.
The Mike Eidson Scholarship Fund was established by the AAJ Women Trial Lawyers Caucus in 2008, in honor of AAJ Past President Mike Eidson, whose vision and generosity inspired it. The Scholarship, traditionally given in the amount of $5,000, is awarded annually to a rising 3L (or rising 4L in a night program) female student who has demonstrated a commitment to a career as a plaintiffs’ lawyer or criminal defense lawyer, along with dedication to upholding and defending the principles of the Constitution, and to the concept of a fair trial, the adversary system, and a just result for the injured, the accused, and those whose rights are jeopardized.
The application deadline is May 31, 2012 and the Scholarship will be awarded at the AAJ Annual Convention, which will take place this year in July in Chicago.

Visit to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility

The next visit to the ICE detention facility in Dodge County is scheduled for Wednesday, February 1. The visit is
conducted in collaboration with the National Immigrant Justice Center to screen persons detained by ICE for relief
from deportation. Immigrant detainees are not eligible for court-appointed counsel and this is usually the only
service offered to them throughout the deportation process.

These trips are a great opportunity to get firsthand experience and implement the skills learned in law school.
1Ls are encouraged to attend as are 2Ls and 3Ls! No prior immigration law experience is necessary, but Spanish
language skills are helpful. We are also in need and would greatly appreciate any UW certified drivers to volunteer.

At the end we’ll be having an h’ors d’oeuvres reception and informal discussion.

Marsha L. Varvil-Weld, the Public Education Coordinator for the State Bar of Wisconsin, is looking for law students to participate in scoring high school mock trial competitions. The competitions help high school students develop research and oral advocacy skills while also learning how a trial works. Law students who would like to participate will be responsible for inputting the scores of each mock trial team into a software system.

This is a great opportunity for law students to network with lawyers and judges that help these events run smoothly. Volunteers will need to have access to a car in order to participate because the mock trials happen all over the Wisconsin area, including Madison, La Crosse, Janesville, and Juneau.

The State Bar will have a training session for volunteers in late January. The first competition will be on February 11th.

Pre-Summer Ethics Fellowship in NYC, Germany, and Poland
FASPE (Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics), in collaboration with The Museum of Jewish Heritage—A Living Memorial to the Holocaust, is now accepting applications for a fellowship designed to challenge law students to consider contemporary ethical issues using the conduct of their historical peers in Nazi Germany as a framework.

Fellowships include an all-expense paid trip from New York to Berlin, Krakow, and Oświęcim (Auschwitz) where students will work with leading faculty to explore both history and the ethical issues facing their profession today. All program costs, including international and European travel, lodging, and food, are covered.

The program dates for FASPE Law are May 20 – May 31, 2012.

Completed applications must be received by January 6, 2012. Candidates of all religious, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply. All students who are enrolled in law programs at the time of their application are eligible to apply.

JEWISH FEDERATION ACADEMIC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Educational scholarship funds from grants administered by the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago are available for Jewish college and graduate students. More than $500,000 each year is available for full-time students, predominantly those legally domiciled in the metropolitan Chicago area, who are identified as having promise for significant contributions in their chosen careers. Assistance is available primarily for those with FINANCIAL NEED who are pursuing careers in the helping professions.

Jewish Vocational Service (JVS) processes academic scholarship applications from eligible students who have financial needs that cannot fully be met by other appropriate resources. Please complete the correct forms according to your status.

Marsha L. Varvil-Weld, the Public Education Coordinator for the State Bar of Wisconsin, is looking for law students to participate in scoring high school mock trial competitions. The competitions help high school students develop research and oral advocacy skills while also learning how a trial works. Law students who would like to participate will be responsible for inputting the scores of each mock trial team into a software system.

This is a great opportunity for law students to network with lawyers and judges that help these events run smoothly. Volunteers will need to have access to a car in order to participate because the mock trials happen all over the Wisconsin area, including Madison, La Crosse, Janesville, and Juneau.

The State Bar will have a training session for volunteers in late January. The first competition will be on February 11th.

All 1Ls interested in trying out for Wisconsin’s Moot Court Board must self-enroll in the “2012 Moot Court Board 1L Tryouts” Lexis Web Course between January 18 and January 24th at 5pm!

Anyone considering participating in the tryouts MUST self-enroll in this web course during these dates because this is the only way 1Ls can access and complete the tryout problem. The tryout schedule can be accessed via the web course once you have enrolled.

Enrolling in this web course does NOT obligate any 1L to participate – it merely gives you the option and information to do so.

University of Wisconsin–Madison students who do not have valid Wisconsin IDs will be issued a free supplemental identification card for voting purposes only.

Students who are Wisconsin residents and have a state-issued driver’s license or identification cards are able to vote using those forms of identification and do not need the UW–Madison voter ID.
